Men's Grooming Guide - Proper Shoe Maintenance ...
Tips on men’s grooming are not complete if tips about proper shoe maintenance are not provided.
In today’s reality the shoes a man wears and the condition of his shoes mean a lot.
Therefore, it is important to buy the best shoes possible and to keep your shoes in the best
possible condition. It is important to remember here, that if you keep your shoes well maintained
you will not have to buy new pairs so often, which can help you save money.
Step 1 – Identifying the Right Shoes
Although it’s important how a pair of shoes look on your feet and blend with your overall style;
it is also very important to make sure that you wear shoes that are comfortable and healthy
for your feet. You should actually take this aspect of shoe shopping seriously, because bad
shoes can lead to health issues such as back pain. Therefore in addition to consulting your doctor
when need be, it is important to make sure that the shoes you are about to buy (or the ones
you have) fit snugly at the heels and the insteps do not gape open. Also, the toe box of your
shoes should be big enough where you can wiggle your toes. Finally always get both of your
feet measured when buying shoes and always buy shoes that fit the bigger foot.
Step 2 – Before Breaking in Your Shoes
Most shoes are made of leather or suede - which are both susceptible to stains and damage.
Therefore, before you wear your shoes for the very first time you should treat it with a solution
that protects leather and/or suede. Reapply the treatment as often as suggested by the
manufacturer.
Step 3 – Maintaining Your Shoes
Although mentioned earlier, it is important to stress again here that in the world of men’s
grooming it is important to have your shoes clean and undamaged. Therefore you should replace
the shoelaces of your shoes every 3-4 months or as needed and you should get your shoes
shined every 1-2 weeks by a professional shoe shiner. Just as with cars the more you maintain
your shoes the longer they will last.
Step 4 – Repairing Your Shoes
A good quality shoe, as described in the first step, can be relatively costly. Further more, if you
are of the few people who get their shoes custom made to fit each foot you should be very
interested in maintaining your shoes, because with the proper maintenance a good pair of shoes
may last a lifetime. Never dispose of a shoe because the sole is wearing away or because there
is a tear on the inside or because the threads have become loose or for any other reason.
Just like you take your car to the mechanic when it has a problem, you should take your shoes
to a shoe repair specialist for diagnosis and repair.
