Men's Grooming Guide - How to Shave Properly ...
When discussing men’s grooming, many men often complain that they can not achieve a close
shave which leaves their face feeling smooth. Other men experience a lot of ingrown hairs on
their face, and yet others do not apply the basic principles of shaving and assume that facial
problems will not happen to them. However shaving is an important part of proper men’s
grooming and requires a few steps to achieve a smooth and healthy shave.
Step 1 – Preparing to Shave
One of the most important steps to healthy men’s grooming habits when it comes to shaving is
to first soak your face in hot water (careful not too hot). A good idea may be to soak a towel in
hot water and to cover with it the area of your face you will be shaving for about two or three
minutes.
Step 2 – Before Applying Shaving Cream
After you have soaked your face with hot water you should apply a generous amount of
pre-shave oil, such as the Art of Shaving TM Pre-Shave Oil, to the area of your face which you
would like to shave.
Step 3 – Applying Shaving Cream
While men often like to skip the expensive brands and go with the more affordable option it is
very important to use a high quality shave cream, such as the Art of Shaving TM Shaving Cream,
which also moisturizes the skin preparing it for a great shave. Additionally, it is recommended to
use a shaving brush, such as the Art of Shaving TM Badger Hair Shaving Brush, when lathering
up the beard to soften and raise the hair away from the skin for a closer shave.
Step 4 – Shaving
An important thing to remember when it comes to shaving is that your razor should be replaced
every 5-7 days (if you shave daily). Secondly it is smarter to avoid single blade razors and go
with the three or five blade versions. Starting with your mustache shave with the grain of your
facial hair while rinsing off loose hairs from your razor using warm water.  If you would like to get
a closer shave you should reapply the shaving cream to your face and shave gently against
the grain.
Step 5 – Completing the Shave
When you finish shaving, you should rinse off excess hairs and shaving cream with cool water.
There after you should apply a high quality after shave balm, such as the Art of Shaving TM
After-Shave Balm, to help protect the pores of your face and cool down your skin.
